Metropolitan Hilarion Detained and Released

Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev), the head of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Czech branch, and his driver have been released from custody without any charges after being detained on suspicion of drug possession. Both were let go without bail, travel restrictions, or any other conditions. Despite their release, the criminal investigation remains open, and official analysis by Czech police confirmed that a white substance found during a vehicle search is an illegal narcotic.

The incident occurred on Sunday, May 24, when Metropolitan Hilarion’s car was stopped after leaving the Orthodox Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Karlovy Vary. Czech law enforcement deployed two units, which discovered four containers of a white substance in the trunk. Grigory Alfeyev, widely known as Metropolitan Hilarion, previously led the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations and is currently under Ukrainian sanctions. The Czech government has also indicated its intention to add him to a national sanctions list due to alleged ties with Russian intelligence services.

Sexual Misconduct Allegations and Church Response

The situation surrounding Metropolitan Hilarion is further complicated by sexual misconduct scandals. In the summer of 2024, a 20-year-old cell attendant named Georgy Suzuki accused him of sexual harassment. In response, the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church removed the metropolitan from his position in the Diocese of Budapest and Hungary and reassigned him to the Czech Republic. Reacting to these events, the Russian Foreign Ministry characterized the detention as a 'staged provocation,' while Metropolitan Kirill (Pokrovsky) described the situation as 'satanic.'

As a result, the circumstances involving Metropolitan Hilarion remain tense, given his reported connections to the FSB and the scandals surrounding his person.

This incident has sparked significant public outcry, as Metropolitan Hilarion holds a prominent role within the Russian Orthodox Church and has ties to state institutions. His detention and subsequent release without charges raise questions about justice and the transparency of investigations, especially in light of drug and sexual misconduct allegations. The case’s future developments could have serious repercussions for the church’s reputation and leadership, as well as for interstate relations in the region.
