The Global Chain Operation

Authorities participating in the multinational Global Chain operation have dismantled human trafficking networks spanning four continents, resulting in over a thousand arrests and the identification of more than two thousand victims. Running from June 8 to June 12, the initiative involved law enforcement agencies from 59 countries. The crackdown led to the launch of 465 criminal investigations, including 334 arrests directly linked to human trafficking and an additional 690 arrests for related offenses.

Led by Austrian and Romanian law enforcement, the operation was coordinated by Interpol, Europol, Frontex, and Ameripol. Investigators identified 2,070 trafficking victims hailing from 45 different nations. The most commonly represented nationalities among the victims were:

  • Argentina
  • Colombia
  • Venezuela
  • Moldova
  • Nepal

Approximately 10% of the identified victims were minors from countries in the Americas.

Exposed Criminal Networks

Several specific trafficking rings were also uncovered during the operation. In Brazil, authorities dismantled a network that had been smuggling people to Cambodia to participate in online scams. In Belgium, 17 individuals were arrested on suspicion of recruiting underage girls for sexual exploitation within Belgium and France. Additionally, in Kyiv, a 53-year-old Armenian national was taken into custody; he had been wanted by Interpol since 2005 on suspicion of serious crimes, including intentional murder.

These results demonstrate what can be achieved when nations unite to disrupt criminal networks and strengthen cross-regional cooperation. Traffickers exploit vulnerabilities across borders, and our response must be equally global, coordinated, and uncompromising.

Valdesi Urquisa, representative of international law enforcement agencies

The Global Chain operation has underscored the critical need for international collaboration in combating human trafficking and related crimes, which demand a comprehensive approach and the active involvement of many countries.

This operation represents a major step forward in the global fight against human trafficking, which remains a serious international challenge. The cases uncovered highlight the wide variety of criminal schemes used to exploit people and reinforce the need for continued efforts to protect vulnerable populations. The joint actions of law enforcement agencies from different countries show that only coordinated efforts can effectively counter this type of crime.
