Multiple citizenship in Ukraine: new rules will take effect from 2026
Starting from January 16, 2026, new citizenship rules will come into effect in Ukraine, granting Ukrainians the right to multiple citizenships, provided they meet the state's requirements. These changes have become possible due to the adoption of a new law that abolishes the previous practice of losing Ukrainian citizenship as a result of obtaining a foreign passport.
According to the new rules, Ukrainians will be able to obtain multiple citizenships, opening new opportunities for them in the international environment and making it easier to travel, work, and study abroad. Furthermore, the new law provides simplified conditions for foreigners from partner countries to acquire Ukrainian citizenship.
Simplified regime of multiple citizenship
The simplified regime of multiple citizenship applies to citizens of:
- USA
- Canada
- Germany
- Poland
- Czech Republic
This means that representatives of these countries will be able to obtain Ukrainian citizenship more easily, which may strengthen ties between Ukraine and these states.
Thus, the introduction of new citizenship rules in Ukraine opens new horizons for Ukrainians and foreigners interested in obtaining a Ukrainian passport. The changes, which will take effect in 2026, may significantly impact demographic and socio-economic processes in the country, contributing to the development of international relations and Ukraine's integration into the global community.
The introduction of multiple citizenship rules can be an important step for Ukraine in the context of its European and international integration.
