Press Conference with Kirsty Coventry

During a press conference, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry addressed a question from Artem Khudoleiev, a journalist with Glavkom, concerning an unauthorized trip to annexed Crimea by Russia's Minister of Sports and Olympic Committee head, Mikhail Degtyarev. Coventry confirmed that details of this visit have been forwarded to the IOC Legal Commission, which is currently reviewing the matter. She also stated that the Russian Olympic Committee remains suspended from international competitions.

Statements by Mikhail Degtyarev

In the same press conference, Coventry stressed the significance of examining this situation, noting:

'All the information we have received has been passed to the IOC Legal Commission. These are precisely the issues the commission will be reviewing. It is currently examining them. That is why the Russian Olympic Committee remains suspended. As an organization, we must look at and hear all sides of this story. That is what we are trying to do now. And that is where we currently stand.'

For his part, Mikhail Degtyarev described the victories of Russian athletes at the 2026 Paralympic Games as 'a beacon for Russian occupiers.' The Russian team finished third in the medal standings at the Paralympics, held in Italy. Degtyarev also highlighted that the Ministry of Sports, together with the Russian Paralympic Committee, is actively working to involve participants of the special operation in adaptive sports. He considers this a crucial step for the social reintegration of veterans, including through workshops and athletic events.

Degtyarev stated:

'I see this as a good cause that helps children. Beyond being a national celebration, it serves as a beacon for veterans of the special operation, because it shows people that even with health limitations, you can find your way, achieve results, and continue to glorify Russia.'

As a result, the situation surrounding Degtyarev's visit to Crimea and his comments about Russian athletes' achievements remain under review by the IOC Legal Commission.

This development underscores the complexities of international sports politics in the context of the annexation of Crimea and the participation of Russian athletes in global events. The IOC continues to monitor the situation to ensure compliance with its rules and principles, which could affect future competitions and the involvement of Russian competitors. At the same time, Degtyarev's remarks reflect attempts by the Russian side to leverage sports accomplishments to boost national morale and support veterans, potentially carrying long-term implications for the image of sports both within Russia and abroad.

As the IOC continues to scrutinize the actions of Russian officials in relation to international sports, the implications of neutral Russian athletes participating in events alongside sanctioned officials become increasingly significant. This ongoing examination highlights the complex landscape of sports governance amid geopolitical tensions.
