Moldova's Bid to Join the Ukraine Support Coalition

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has declared the country's readiness to become part of the international coalition supporting Ukraine. She stated that this move is contingent upon approval from the coalition's existing members. Moldova is already providing assistance to Ukraine, including conducting demining training for sappers.

Moldova has expressed its willingness to participate in this coalition of the willing. I would like to remind you that we are already providing support to Ukraine by conducting demining training. This is precisely what we can do and what we have offered, should the members of the coalition of the willing decide to accept our country's accession.

Moldova's potential participation does not contravene its Constitution, and its request still requires consideration by other coalition member states. Following a meeting on February 24, leaders from over 30 countries in the coalition confirmed their commitment to helping formulate security guarantees for Ukraine with U.S. support. Moldova, a neighbor of Ukraine, has faced significant regional instability and economic pressure since Russia's invasion.

Denunciation of the Commonwealth of Independent States Agreement

In a related development, Moldova's Parliament has given initial approval to denounce the agreement that established the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The initiative came from Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which argued that Russia's war against Ukraine and other conflicts violate the organization's foundational principles.

It is important that we are also part of these efforts. As I have said, our specialists can conduct training and participate in demining operations if the war in Ukraine ends.

Maia Sandu

President Sandu's statement signals a shift in Moldova's foreign policy stance amid current geopolitical challenges. The support for demining training and the move to leave the CIS underscore Moldova's aim to bolster its own security and demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine against Russian aggression. These steps are likely to enhance Moldova's international standing and strengthen its position within the region as it pursues closer ties with the European Union.

As Moldova seeks to strengthen its international alliances in support of Ukraine, it is also taking significant steps domestically. The recent decision to withdraw from the CIS treaty underscores the government's commitment to distancing itself from Russian influence and aligning more closely with Western partners. This move reflects the broader geopolitical shifts in the region and Moldova's proactive stance in ensuring its security and sovereignty.
