Joint Drone Development with Ukraine
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has announced a new partnership with Ukraine to jointly develop interceptor drones, stressing the urgent need for legal reforms to bolster the country's domestic defense industry. She made the announcement during a podcast interview with a local blogger that aired on Sunday.
Sandu called on the government to draft legislative changes that would enable Chișinău to establish public-private partnerships in weapons manufacturing and attract foreign investors. She emphasized,
“Those who want our country to be completely defenseless must understand: there is a risk that drones will fall on us, and we will be powerless to respond”— Maia Sandu.
Security Challenges and Military Capacity
Consultations with Ukraine have already begun, and according to Sandu, the Ukrainians are 'the best in the field of interceptor drones.' The president noted that Moldova will seek to acquire technology from Ukraine as much as possible, but this first requires training a team of specialists.
Moldova, a constitutionally neutral country, has repeatedly faced airspace security issues. Since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, Moldovan forces have recorded over 20 incidents of Russian drones violating its airspace or their debris falling on its territory. In May of this year, a Russian drone struck a residential building in the Romanian city of Galați, injuring two people.
Moldova's armed forces consist of about 6,000 active personnel and 12,000 reservists, but the country lacks its own tanks, and its air force is limited to just two helicopters and one transport aircraft. The Transnistria region hosts the Russian Operational Group, numbering around 1,500 troops. As a result, Moldova remains vulnerable to threats from neighboring states.
This announcement by President Sandu signals Chișinău's determination to strengthen its defenses amid growing threats from Russia. The push for legislative changes to develop the defense industry highlights the critical need to modernize the country's military infrastructure, which currently has limited resources. This initiative could become a key step in securing Moldova's safety and deepening defense cooperation with Ukraine.
As Moldova enhances its defense capabilities through collaboration with Ukraine, it's worth noting that similar initiatives are underway elsewhere. A recent agreement is nearing completion for joint drone production between the U.S. and Ukraine, highlighting a broader trend in international military partnerships. Such developments could provide valuable insights into how Moldova might strengthen its own defense strategies.
