Deferrals Revoked for Medical Personnel in Ukraine

Ukraine's Ministry of Health may revoke the deferrals of certain healthcare workers so they can serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military branches. Health Minister Viktor Liashko announced this during a government question hour in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament.

According to the announcement, medical professionals are being released from their deferrals in response to each specific request from the Ministry of Defense. A multidisciplinary team, including representatives from the Health Ministry, Defense Ministry, and relevant regional authorities, handles the process. Viktor Liashko stated:

'For every request they make to release personnel, a multidisciplinary team works, involving the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Health, and the relevant regions. We are releasing medical workers so they can join the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other formations.' Viktor Liashko, Minister of Health of Ukraine

Oversight of Medical Care

The minister also stressed the importance of maintaining oversight of medical care delivery, noting:

'Regarding medical workers. We have said many times – the question is why deferrals were granted to medical workers in the first place. It was to control the process of providing medical care, particularly for wounded soldiers receiving treatment in relevant hospitals, including civilian ones.' Viktor Liashko, Minister of Health of Ukraine

He added: 'As minister, I must ensure that medical care is provided to everyone who needs it across the entire territory of Ukraine.'

Additionally, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has decided to replace civilian reporting norms for narcotic painkillers with simplified military protocols, a change that will also impact the medical sector during wartime. The Ministry of Health continues to collaborate with the Ministry of Defense and the command of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to ensure effective medical care and support for military personnel.

These measures highlight the growing integration of Ukraine's healthcare sector with its armed forces amid the ongoing war. Releasing medical workers from deferrals may be necessary to support the military, but it remains crucial that oversight of medical care stays robust to ensure assistance for all in need. The adoption of simplified military protocols for painkiller use could also enable faster responses to the needs of wounded soldiers.

As the situation evolves, the government is also implementing measures to enhance healthcare infrastructure. These efforts are crucial, especially with the approaching winter season, as they aim to ensure that hospitals remain self-sufficient and capable of providing necessary care.
