UNESCO’s Response to Attack on Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Draws Sharp Criticism
Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned UNESCO’s reaction to a Russian strike on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, pointing out that the organization’s statement omitted any mention of Russia as the perpetrator. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhiy Tykhyi highlighted the absurdity of the situation, stating:
“An organization responsible for safeguarding cultural heritage does not even know from whom it needs to protect it. Why is it so difficult to simply say 'Russian strike'? Unfortunately, under the leadership of Khaled El-Enany, UNESCO continues to demonstrate a lack of leadership, weakness, and an inability to fulfill its mandate.”
Russia launched a nighttime attack on Ukraine, with Kyiv bearing the brunt of the assault, including a direct hit on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. The strike triggered a massive fire on the UNESCO World Heritage site, engulfing the roof of the Dormition Cathedral. While the damage was severe, sacred items and liturgical objects from the monastery were successfully evacuated.
Official UNESCO Statement and Reactions from Ukrainian Organizations
UNESCO issued an official statement condemning the attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, emphasizing that the site is one of Ukraine’s most important spiritual and cultural landmarks. The organization noted that any strikes on such sites constitute a direct violation of international law. However, the Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church released a statement that merely dryly acknowledged the destruction, completely avoiding any condemnation of the aggressor state, Russia. Former Defense Minister and politician Anatoliy Hrytsenko also criticized the official response from the abbot of the damaged Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, Bishop Avraamiy.
In conclusion, Svyrydenko announced that the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, damaged in the Russian attack on the night of June 15, will be restored.
This incident underscores the critical need for international support and a clear stance on the ongoing aggression in Ukraine. UNESCO’s failure to identify the aggressor has raised alarm among Ukrainian officials and cultural figures, who expect decisive action from international organizations to protect cultural heritage. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra should be safeguarded not only by Ukraine but also by the global community, which must clearly identify threats and respond accordingly.
The ongoing situation surrounding the attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra has sparked significant debate about UNESCO's role and responsibilities. As Ukraine's Foreign Minister emphasizes the need for decisive action from the organization, many are calling for a stronger response to ensure the protection of cultural heritage sites.
