Poachers in Kyiv Region Cause Over 300,000 UAH in Damages by Illegally Catching Crayfish and Fish

Незаконний лов раків та риби в Київській області призвів до значних фінансових втрат.

Illegal Fishing and Crayfish Poaching on the Rostavytsia River

On the Rostavytsia River, near the village of Trushky in the Bila Tserkva district of Kyiv Oblast, inspectors from the Environmental Control Unit of the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Capital District uncovered cases of unauthorized fishing and crayfish trapping. Using two nets, a poacher caught 29 crayfish and 27 fish, resulting in damages exceeding 152,000 UAH to the local fishery. An investigative team was dispatched to the scene, and authorities are now considering launching criminal proceedings.

It is worth noting that during Ukraine's spawning season, industrial fishing, motorboat traffic, and the use of net-based gear are strictly prohibited. Recreational fishing is only allowed from the shore with a single rod and one hook. These regulations highlight the need for rigorous enforcement to combat poaching and protect aquatic ecosystems.

Another Illegal Catch Reported in Hostomel

Separately, in the town of Hostomel, a 41-year-old man was caught illegally fishing using nets and a rubber boat. The damages from his actions amount to over 158,000 UAH.

“Given the significant scale of the damage and the use of banned equipment, an investigative team was called to the scene. A decision on whether to open a criminal case is currently underway,” stated the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Capital District.
These incidents underscore the critical role of state oversight in enforcing environmental regulations and fishing rules.

These cases highlight the ongoing problem of poaching in Ukraine, especially during spawning periods when aquatic ecosystems are most vulnerable. Stricter monitoring of environmental compliance not only helps reduce fishery losses but also supports the preservation of biodiversity. Given the severe consequences of illegal fishing, it is essential for government agencies to maintain active efforts in this area.

In light of the recent incidents of illegal fishing in the Kyiv region, it is crucial to understand the broader implications of such activities on local ecosystems. For instance, another case involving poachers near Kyiv resulted in significant damages of over 91,000 Hryvnias. This highlights the urgent need for enhanced regulatory measures to combat poaching effectively.
