Ukraine plans to launch a National Register of alcoholic beverages that will protect traditional products and secure them for specific regions. This involves forming a system of geographical indications, similar to that in EU countries. AgroPortal reports on this here.

Register of Alcoholic Beverages in Ukraine: Which Drinks Are Planned to Be Protected

The initiative includes adding both national and local alcoholic products of historical value to the register.

Among the drinks that may receive official status are:

  • vodka

  • horilka

  • starka

  • varenukha

  • zapikanka

  • perchivka.

Special attention is paid to regional production traditions, specifically concerning Transcarpathian fruit distillates, Galician tinctures, and Podolian grain beverages.

Geographical Indications of Alcohol: Why This Matters to Ukraine

According to the head of the “Association of Craft Distillers of Ukraine” Kateryna Kamysheva, creating the register has both cultural and economic significance.

The main advantages of the initiative are:

  • protection of unique recipes and names from copying

  • development of regional brands

  • increased income for local producers

  • formation of a recognizable image of Ukraine in the international market.

«This is not just romance but a real economic tool for protecting the region, the country's brand, and producers' incomes,» Kamysheva stated.

Currently, traditional Ukrainian beverages do not have adequate legal protection, unlike products from France, Italy, or other European countries. The launch of the register aims to rectify this situation and integrate the Ukrainian market into the international system of geographical indications.

Reminder: Recent studies have shown that it improves sleep. It turned out that alcohol after coffee can significantly improve the situation.
