New Leadership for Ukraine's Naftogaz

At its first meeting with a renewed membership, the Supervisory Board of Ukraine's National Joint Stock Company Naftogaz has elected a new chairperson. The role will be filled by Duncan Nightingale, a Canadian specialist with over three decades of experience in the oil and gas sector. The board also appointed Kostyantyn Maryevych, a State Secretary of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine who represents the state on the board, as its deputy chair. The meeting was held in Kyiv with the participation of all board members.

Committee Formation and a Major Legal Win

The board approved its meeting schedule for 2026 and established several committees. Robert Sleszynski was appointed chair of the Nominations, Remuneration, and Evaluation Committee, with Duncan Nightingale and Kostyantyn Maryevych as members. The Audit and Finance Committee will be chaired by Erik Rasmussen, with Tor Martin Anfinnsen and Anna Artemenko as members. Tor Martin Anfinnsen will chair the Strategy and Sustainable Development Committee, with Erik Rasmussen and Anna Artemenko serving as its members.

In a separate but significant development, the Naftogaz group has won a crucial legal victory against Russia's Gazprom, securing a court award exceeding $1.4 billion. The Swiss Federal Supreme Court has fully dismissed Gazprom's appeal, thereby upholding an arbitration tribunal's ruling from June 2025. This final decision obliges Gazprom to pay Naftogaz for outstanding gas transit services, plus interest and legal costs. This ruling is a major financial and legal milestone for the Ukrainian state energy company.

These leadership changes at Naftogaz coincide with the company's recent legal successes, which are expected to bolster its future development and international standing. The appointment of seasoned professionals to key governance roles signals an intent to enhance corporate management and ensure stability amid a volatile energy market. The court victory over Gazprom represents a vital step in strengthening Naftogaz's financial position and boosting confidence among international investors and partners, as Ukraine continues to reform its energy sector.

The recent changes in Naftogaz's leadership are part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing the company's governance and operational efficiency.
