Ivan Uryvskyi Honored as People's Artist of Ukraine
Director Ivan Uryvskyi has been awarded the title of People's Artist of Ukraine. This prestigious state honor was conferred by Presidential Decree No. 276/2026 and presented in celebration of International Theater Day, observed annually on March 27. Uryvskyi serves as the chief director at the National Academic Drama Theater named after Ivan Franko.
'The Witch of Konotop' Proves a Major Hit
A standout production during the International Theater Day celebrations was 'The Witch of Konotop,' based on the novella of the same name by Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko. The production's ticket sales reached a remarkable 600,000 Ukrainian hryvnias, demonstrating its immense audience appeal. As Yevhen Nyshchuk noted,
“No matter how many times we schedule it per month, it sells out in 13 minutes.” - Yevhen Nyshchuk
This success is part of a broader trend in Ukrainian theater. In 2025, Ukrainian theaters collectively generated 4.5 billion hryvnias in revenue. The ten highest-earning theaters alone accounted for 2.28 billion hryvnias of this total, according to data from the analytical platform Vkursi. These figures highlight the resilience and growing economic vitality of the performing arts in Ukraine, even during challenging times. The data reflects a dynamic period of growth and renewed public engagement with the country's cultural institutions.
The recognition of Ivan Uryvskyi underscores the vital role of leading artists in fostering national culture. The commercial success of productions like 'The Witch of Konotop' and the sector's overall strong financial performance signal a robust recovery and rising public interest in theater. This positive momentum is encouraging for Ukraine's cultural sector and may help attract further investment and support for theatrical initiatives across the nation.
