Safety Gaps in the Artemis Program

A critical oversight has been identified by independent NASA inspectors: the Artemis program lacks a contingency plan to rescue astronauts on the Moon in the event of an emergency. The first crewed U.S. landing under this initiative is scheduled for 2028 near the lunar South Pole. This region poses heightened risks due to its cratered terrain, large boulders, and steep slopes—conditions that significantly increase hazards for the crew.

Notably, no backup lander or alternative vehicle will be available on the lunar surface to return astronauts if the primary craft fails. The risk of an accident during this mission exceeds that of the Apollo program. Despite collaborating with companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin to develop lunar landers, NASA has not required them to build emergency backup vehicles.

Proposed Safety Enhancements

Space analyst Brian Herley has suggested delivering a backup module to the Moon, costing between $3 and $5 billion, before the first crewed mission. In response to the identified flaws, NASA has agreed to reassess its risk evaluation and develop additional plans to ensure astronaut safety. The total budget for the Artemis program has already surpassed $100 billion, yet the safety issue remains critically urgent.
