Breakthrough in Space Science

Scientists have uncovered the reason behind the rapid heat loss observed in the rocks on asteroid Bennu. NASA researchers identified a distinctive combination of high porosity and an intricate network of fractures within Bennu's rock, explaining the asteroid's swift cooling behavior. This discovery was made using advanced X-ray computed tomography alongside other laboratory techniques.

Insights from the Bennu Mission

The NASA spacecraft OSIRIS-REx arrived at Bennu in 2018, revealing a surface dominated by large boulders rather than smooth, fine-grained regolith patches. This rugged terrain significantly affects how the asteroid stores and releases heat. Bennu exhibits low thermal inertia, meaning its surface heats up and cools down quickly.

Samples from Bennu were analyzed at NASA's Johnson Space Center. Led by Andrew Ryan of the University of Arizona in collaboration with Japanese scientists, the team discovered that Bennu's rock contains a surprisingly high amount of pores and a complex system of microcracks. Using synchronized thermography combined with laser heating, researchers obtained detailed insights into the rock's internal structure.

By integrating computed tomography data with thermal modeling, scientists gained a deeper understanding of Bennu’s heat transfer processes. The pores and internal cracks act both as insulators and conductors, enabling the rapid cooling of the asteroid’s large boulders. The collected samples were returned to Earth for comprehensive examination, with findings published in the journal Nature Communications.

This discovery is critical for advancing asteroid research and sheds light on their internal makeup. Studying Bennu also offers valuable clues about the early formation stages of our Solar System, as asteroids like Bennu are remnants of the primordial material that formed the planets. Understanding the thermal dynamics of such bodies will inform the planning of future sample-return missions and exploration of other celestial objects.

Understanding the unique characteristics of Bennu's rocks not only sheds light on its rapid cooling but also opens up discussions about the broader implications for asteroid origins. For instance, recent studies highlight the role of Jupiter and the water ice line in shaping Bennu's formation.
