NATO's Readiness in the Wake of a Drone Incident

Poland's Chargé d'Affaires in Ukraine, Piotr Lukasiewicz, has commented on NATO's state of preparedness following an incident where Russian drones violated Polish airspace on September 10, 2025. Lukasiewicz underscored the critical importance of allied cooperation in defending Polish skies, noting that aircraft from Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, alongside the Polish Air Force, were involved in the interception. This event highlights the ongoing security challenges on NATO's eastern flank stemming from the conflict in Ukraine.

He further stated that Poland's security is fundamentally underpinned by the physical presence of U.S. and other allied troops. Poland actively participates in NATO's Air Policing program, which patrols the airspace over the Baltic states. This forms part of the Alliance's broader collective defense strategy, which was put into practical effect during the drone incident.

Exercise Hedgehog-2025 and International Cooperation

Lukasiewicz also highlighted Exercise Hedgehog-2025, conducted in Estonia last year. The drills involved over 16,000 military personnel from 12 NATO nations, demonstrating robust international support. Ukrainian specialists in unmanned systems were among the participants, emphasizing the importance of cross-border security collaboration. Arbo Probal, head of the Estonian Defence Forces' unmanned systems program, also took part.

Lukasiewicz stressed the complexity of military scenarios, stating:

“Both full-scale war and preparations for Ukrainian counteroffensives have shown that any battle simulation has little in common with reality. Military scenarios can be developed, but the course of events is far too unpredictable.”

He added:

“A nation's ability to defend itself is influenced not only by the quantity of weapons and the existence of military production, but also by political decisions, which can themselves be unpredictable.”

Lukasiewicz emphasized that he feels no disappointment in NATO's collective defense, as “it was NATO forces that came to the defense of Polish airspace when Russian drones invaded it on September 10.” This served as a clear example of the Alliance's common defense policy in action.

The nations whose aircraft participated in defending Polish airspace on September 10, 2025, were:

  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • United Kingdom
  • Poland

This incident and Exercise Hedgehog-2025 reaffirm the vital importance of international cooperation in security and defense amid contemporary challenges. The drone interception and the involvement of allied forces underscore the intensification of military collaboration among NATO countries in response to growing threats. Joint exercises and tactical actions demonstrate the Alliance's readiness to address new security challenges in the region. The significance of such initiatives is particularly acute against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine and heightened tensions with Russia.
