Getting just one serious sunburn could set the stage for skin cancer later in life, according to a meta-analysis.
Skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet many people do not realize how much early sun damage matters. The research, published in the journal JAMA Dermatology, was led by Isaac Weber at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. His dermatology team pooled data from 17 studies covering more than 321,000 people to examine the connection between painful sunburns in childhood or adolescence and the later development of skin cancer.
The findings show that people who experienced painful, blistering sunburns with moderate frequency faced a 51% higher risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma. When those burns happened at high frequency, the risk rose by 69%. Among individuals who had many severe burns at an early age, the odds of squamous cell carcinoma could triple, with melanoma and basal cell carcinoma also becoming more likely.
Prevention and Advice
Sunburns are caused by ultraviolet radiation, which damages DNA in skin cells. Over time, these genetic injuries can accumulate and lead to mutations. Experts therefore stress the importance of avoiding burns altogether:
- Use sunscreen regularly.
- Wear protective clothing and hats.
- Limit time in direct sunlight during peak hours.
- Avoid tanning beds.
Specialists at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York warn that 'life-changing sunburns' can become a serious threat to future health.
