Ukraine's Central Bank Issues New 10-Hryvnia Coins Honoring Three Heroic Regions

Нові монети номіналом 10 гривень від Національного банку України вшановують три героїчні області країни.

New Commemorative Coins Enter Circulation

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has released new commemorative 10-hryvnia coins into circulation, dedicated to the heroic regions of Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Kherson. These coins are minted from a zinc alloy with a nickel coating and are part of an expanded series highlighting the importance of these areas to the nation. This series serves as a tribute to regions that have shown immense resilience.

The release of these commemorative circulation coins will continue through 2026-2027. The program plans to issue 54 million coins dedicated to various Ukrainian regions. The reverse of each coin features a map of Ukraine, symbolizing national unity, with a specific region—Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, or Kherson—individually highlighted.

Overhaul of the Monetary System

According to the NBU, starting March 2, 2026, banknotes in denominations of 1, 2, 5, and 10 hryvnias from the 2003-2007 series will cease to be legal tender and will be withdrawn from cash circulation. This decision underscores broader changes in Ukraine's monetary system, which include the introduction of the new coins intended to become a key part of the country's financial turnover.

The issuance of these commemorative coins underscores the significance of regions that have become symbols of endurance and heroism, particularly given the current challenges facing Ukraine. The monetary system changes, including the withdrawal of old banknotes, reflect the NBU's drive to modernize financial infrastructure, which may also bolster public confidence in the national currency. This could represent a significant step in economic recovery and the stabilization of the country's financial system.
