Launch of the 'Opishnia Ceramics' Commemorative Coin
The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has announced a new commemorative coin celebrating the traditional pottery art of the Opishnia settlement in the Poltava region. This 5-hryvnia coin, titled 'Opishnia Ceramics,' will go on sale on March 25 for 195 hryvnias. A purchase limit of one coin per person has been set for this release. The coin is minted from nickel silver, with a total mintage of 50,000 pieces. Each coin features a reeded edge and will be sold in special souvenir packaging.
On the obverse side, the coin depicts a zoomorphic sculpture of a Lion by the potter Vasyl Omelianenko. It also bears the small State Emblem of Ukraine, the year of mintage 2025, the inscription 'Ukraine', the denomination, the graphic sign of the hryvnia, and the logo of the NBU Banknote and Mint. Collectors of world coins and cultural memorabilia often seek out such issues for their artistic and historical value.
The Significance of Opishnia Ceramics
The reverse side presents a stylized composition of elements from traditional ornamental decor, along with the engraved inscription 'Opishnia Ceramics.' Opishnia ceramics are a landmark phenomenon in Ukrainian national culture, both artistically and ethnographically. In 2012, this pottery tradition was inscribed into Ukraine's National List of Elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, underscoring its importance as a component of the nation's cultural identity, NBU representatives noted.
