New Commemorative Coins Enter Circulation

According to НБУ: On the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has released three new 10-hryvnia commemorative coins into cash circulation. The presentation took place on Khortytsia Island. These coins are part of the 'We Are Strong. We Are Together' series and are dedicated to the Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions. The release coincides with a period of intense conflict in these areas, underscoring their resilience.

The obverse (front) of the coins is identical to standard 10-hryvnia coins from 2018. Two million pieces of each new coin will be issued. A portion of the mintage will be packaged in specially designed rolls of 25 coins, with 15,000 rolls produced for each regional design.

Symbolism of the New Coins

NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyi stated that the 'We Are Strong. We Are Together' series was launched last year to demonstrate Ukraine's unity and the resilience of every region. The three new coins honor frontline regions that endure daily enemy attacks while holding the country's defense. The reverse (back) of each coin features a map of Ukraine as a single, indivisible whole, with the specific region highlighted:

  • Zaporizhzhia
  • Kharkiv
  • Kherson

This design emphasizes that each of these regions is an inseparable part of the Ukrainian state.

Beyond their monetary function, these coins serve as a memorial and a permanent record of Ukraine's endurance. Andriy Pyshnyi stressed that a nation at war must communicate not only with weapons but also with symbols that shape national memory.

“We are strong because we know what we are fighting for. We are together because we understand that only together will we prevail,” – Andriy Pyshnyi.

The issuance of these commemorative coins highlights the importance of reinforcing national identity and unity during wartime. They are not merely economic instruments but also a powerful symbol of the Ukrainian people's steadfastness. Their presentation on the invasion's anniversary underscores their significance in the context of Ukraine's struggle for independence and territorial integrity. They are poised to become an important part of the national narrative, reminding future generations of the suffering and resistance of people in the frontline regions.
