Nighttime Strike on Kyiv Damages Metro Stations, Lavra Monastery, and Dovzhenko Film Studio

Нічна атака по Києву завдала шкоди ключовим об'єктам інфраструктури та культурної спадщини міста.

Kyiv Under Night Attack

On June 15, an overnight assault on Kyiv caused significant damage to the city’s transport infrastructure, including metro stations, bus stops, trolleybus power lines, and municipal vehicles. The attack shattered stained-glass windows at two metro stations, though repairs have been completed and subway operations continue without interruption. Traffic lights are functioning normally. A total of 29 workers and seven specialized vehicles have been deployed to address the aftermath.

The shockwave also disrupted the overhead contact network on Olena Teliha Street and Taras Shevchenko Square. Three investor-owned public transport stops suffered partial damage. One of Kyivpastrans’ facilities was heavily impacted: windows in a service building were blown out, and ten specialized vehicles had their glass broken. Two municipal cars were so severely crushed that they cannot be repaired.

Cultural Heritage Hit Hard

The attack also struck the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, where a direct hit sparked a fire. The roof of the Dormition Cathedral caught fire, but sacred relics and liturgical items were successfully evacuated from the monastery. In the Pechersk district, a five-story residential building was hit, while in the Obolon district, another residential building suffered structural damage between the third and fourth floors. In the Solomyansky district, a nine-story residential building was also targeted.

Additionally, the National Oleksandr Dovzhenko Film Studio was hit, resulting in a fire. The strike destroyed Ukraine’s largest and oldest costume collection, which housed approximately 100,000 costumes and three million clothing items. Other studio buildings and facilities were also damaged. This attack underscores the critical need to protect Kyiv’s infrastructure and cultural treasures.

The nighttime assault on Kyiv represents another loss for a city already grappling with the impacts of prolonged war. Damage to transport networks will complicate residents’ mobility and may disrupt public transit operations. Moreover, the destruction of cultural landmarks like the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and the Dovzhenko Film Studio threatens the preservation of Ukrainian heritage and history, with potential long-term societal consequences. Restoring and safeguarding these sites has become increasingly urgent amid ongoing hostilities.

The recent assault on Kyiv has not only affected public transport but also caused significant damage to cultural sites, including the Dovzhenko Film Studio. This incident highlights the ongoing threats to vital infrastructure and heritage in the city.
