Overnight Russian Missile and Drone Strikes Target Kyiv Region, Causing Casualties and Widespread Damage

Внаслідок нічних обстрілів з боку Росії Київська область зазнала значних втрат і руйнувань.

Ballistic Missile Assault on Kyiv During the Night

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported a nighttime ballistic missile strike by Russian forces on Kyiv and the surrounding Kyiv region, involving 16 ballistic missiles and more than 200 drones. The attacks severely damaged energy infrastructure and civilian facilities, resulting in casualties and injuries. Russian forces targeted energy sites across 11 regions, leaving over 550,000 households without electricity. Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ignat confirmed two missile salvos, noting that one was launched without prior warning from international partners.

The strikes, which took place overnight, focused on the capital city and its outskirts. President Zelensky emphasized that the targets extended beyond energy facilities and included vital infrastructure such as a medical clinic, a school, a metro station, and residential buildings.

"Once again, Russian ballistic missiles attacked in multiple waves overnight, and once again, no prior warning was received from our partners." – Volodymyr Zelensky

Zelensky also highlighted that there are confirmed casualties, and aid is being provided to those affected.

Regions Impacted by the Attacks

Russian forces deployed ballistic missiles alongside over 200 drones of various types, including rocket-powered 'Shahed' drones, hitting not only Kyiv and Kyiv region but also several other areas:

  • Vinnytsia
  • Volyn
  • Kirovohrad
  • Mykolaiv
  • Zhytomyr
  • Khmelnytskyi
  • Kharkiv
  • Ternopil
  • Odesa
  • Rivne

More than 10 energy facilities suffered damage, causing widespread power outages. By 9:37 AM, nearly 66,000 electricity meters were offline in Volyn region alone, affecting cities such as Kovel, Manevychi, and Lutsk, which faced heavy drone bombardment.

Repair crews are actively working to restore power in the affected areas. President Zelensky also criticized the obstruction of missile supplies for Ukraine’s air defense systems, underscoring that Russia continues its aggression and killings unabated.

"When missile supplies for Ukraine’s air defense are blocked, yet Russia receives easing or delays in sanctions, this reflects a troubling denial of reality by our partners." – Volodymyr Zelensky

Additionally, Russian forces struck Kushuhum in Zaporizhzhia, resulting in at least one fatality. Ukraine remains engaged in a fierce struggle against ongoing Russian aggression, with the situation staying highly volatile despite ongoing resistance efforts.

This attack is part of a broader escalation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with profound impacts on civilian populations and critical infrastructure. The destruction of energy facilities jeopardizes electricity supply to a significant number of people, further complicating the humanitarian crisis. President Zelensky’s remarks about blocked missile deliveries for air defense highlight the urgent need for continued and enhanced international support to protect Ukraine from future attacks.

In light of the recent missile attacks, it is essential to understand the broader implications on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. This assault follows a series of targeted strikes, with Russian forces launching a staggering number of attacks on the energy grid, leaving tens of thousands of families without power.
