NATO Gears Up for Ankara Summit Amid Russian Night Strikes on Ukraine and U.S. Troop Drawdown

НАТО готується до саміту в Анкарі на тлі нічних атак Росії на Україну та виведення військових США.

Russian Attacks and NATO's Response

Overnight strikes by Russia against Ukraine on July 2 have rattled NATO member states, who view these actions as a direct provocation against the alliance. Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump pulled back a portion of American military assets from Europe—a move that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says raises serious doubts about Europe's ability to defend itself without American backing.

'The idea that Europe can defend itself without U.S. support is a fantasy.' — Mark Rutte

In addition, Russian fighter jets have been violating NATO airspace to test the alliance’s response times, while drones are crossing into border regions of Western Europe. Moscow continues to deploy ballistic missiles in Ukraine that are capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz underscored the importance of border protection, stating that:

'His country’s borders were securely defended, in part thanks to French and Dutch forces being involved in airspace patrols.'

He also stressed that 'investing in military modernization and maintaining strong alliances is the foundation of citizens’ security.'

What to Expect from the NATO Summit in Turkey

Next week, leaders from all 32 NATO nations will gather in Ankara, Turkey, to assess how much European members are contributing financially. European allies increased their defense spending by $90 billion last year compared to 2024. Meanwhile, the European Union has initiated the transfer of €6 billion (roughly $6.8 billion) to Ukraine as part of a larger €90 billion loan package.

Vladimir Putin has stated that Russia’s primary goal remains the complete capture of Donbas and Novorossiya, claiming that the situation remains under control for Moscow. He also alleged that Ukrainian forces are retreating along the entire front line. EU diplomat Kaja Kallas emphasized that 'Europe will keep raising the cost of war for Russia because Ukraine currently serves as the first line of European defense.'

The current situation highlights the mounting tensions and challenges NATO countries face amid Russian aggression. The upcoming summit in Turkey marks a critical moment for reassessing the alliance’s strategy in the face of escalating threats. At the same time, continued EU support for Ukraine—particularly financial aid—demonstrates a firm commitment to safeguarding European security, which could prove decisive in shaping future developments on the continent.

As NATO prepares for the upcoming summit in Ankara, the alliance remains vigilant against potential threats from Russia, particularly in Eastern Europe. Recent warnings suggest that Moscow may escalate its provocations towards the Baltics or Poland, highlighting the urgency for NATO members to strengthen their defenses.
