Squad Challenges for the Dutch National Team

The Netherlands national football team is dealing with significant personnel issues just before the 2026 World Cup kicks off. Defender Jurriën Timber has withdrawn from the squad due to an injury. The 24-year-old Arsenal London player is still recovering from his setback. Timber has already appeared in five matches for the Netherlands during 2026 World Cup qualifying. To fill the gap, defender Lutsharel Geertruida has been called up. He spent last season with England’s Sunderland.

Goalkeeper Concerns and Netherlands’ World Cup Group

In addition, the Netherlands risk losing goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. During a friendly match against Uzbekistan, he was substituted in the 67th minute because of an injury. The severity of the issue has not yet been disclosed. Verbruggen, who plays for England’s Brighton, became the youngest goalkeeper to start a European Championship match since 1964 when he did so at Euro 2024 at age 21. In 2026 World Cup qualifiers, he has played six matches, keeping three clean sheets.

At the World Cup, the Netherlands are placed in Group F, where their opponents will be:

  • Japan
  • Sweden
  • Tunisia

The Dutch team’s opening match at the 2026 World Cup is scheduled for June 14 against Japan. Separately, it has been reported that a friendly between Scotland and Norway, planned for June 9, 2026, has been canceled. Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken expressed frustration over the Tartan Army’s withdrawal, stating:

“The Tartan Army’s refusal came as a complete surprise” - Ståle Solbakken

With these roster challenges emerging, the Netherlands find themselves in a tough spot ahead of crucial World Cup matches. Injuries to key players could hurt their chances of success in Group F. It will be essential for the coaching staff to adapt quickly to the changing circumstances and equip the team with the resources needed to compete on the global stage.

As the Netherlands grapples with injuries to key players, including Jurriën Timber and potentially Bart Verbruggen, the team's depth will be put to the test. This situation is reminiscent of their recent announcement regarding the squad selection that excluded injured Xavi Simons, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the coaching staff in preparing for the World Cup.
