Germany to Build Europe's First National Missile Detection Satellite Network

Німеччина запускає перший у Європі супутниковий проект для виявлення ракетних загроз.

Germany's National Missile Early Warning Satellite System

Germany is planning to develop a national satellite system for the early detection of missile launches, a first for any European nation. While a national project, it is open to collaboration with European allies. The head of Germany's Space Command, Major General Michael Traut, emphasized that missile detection is an operational priority for the country. This push to enhance its capabilities comes amid heightened military threats, notably Russia's use of the Oreshnik ballistic missile in Ukraine. This move signals a significant shift in Germany's defense posture following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

"We not only want to be able to detect missiles at an early stage, we want to be able to fight them at an early stage."

Michael Traut

This underscores Germany's serious approach to bolstering its defense readiness. The country's chief of defense has ordered preparations for potential war by 2029, but Traut stressed that in space, the nation must be ready to fight now if necessary.

European Union Initiatives

In a related development, the European Union has for the first time launched part of its own secure satellite communications system. The EU's communications system project, incorporating elements of IRIS2 and GOVSATCOM, carries a price tag of 10.6 billion euros. Individual components of these systems have already begun operating in a test mode. Ukraine has also expressed a desire to gain access to this communications network. The EU Commissioner for Defence and Space, Andrius Kubilius, highlighted the importance of such initiatives for strengthening European nations' defense capabilities under current conditions.

The creation of a national missile early warning satellite system highlights the growing security concerns of Germany and its allies in Europe, particularly against the backdrop of ongoing military conflicts. The importance of technological innovations like satellite communications and early detection systems is becoming increasingly evident in the context of modern threats facing the region. This development could also stimulate further integration of defense technologies among EU countries and provide new opportunities for security cooperation.
