Germany Pushes for Stronger Action Against Russian 'Shadow Fleet'
Germany is calling for the European Union to intensify its crackdown on Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet' and to strengthen related sanctions. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized the urgent need for action in response to hybrid threats, which are having a particularly severe impact on the Baltic states. She stated that the Kremlin is exerting significant pressure on the Baltic Sea region and that Germany stands in solidarity with Latvia and other Baltic nations in their efforts to counter these threats.
The European Union has already imposed sanctions on vessels in this shadow fleet and the individuals behind them. However, Baerbock stressed that these sanctions must be continuously expanded and reinforced. She noted that 'there is no time for hesitation' when it comes to protecting critical infrastructure and that new measures targeting Russian vessels are necessary.
New Maritime Surveillance Center Announced
In response to these threats, the Finnish Border Guard, in cooperation with other Baltic Sea states and the European Commission, has announced the creation of a new maritime surveillance center. This center will focus on protecting critical underwater infrastructure in the Gulf of Finland. Annalena Baerbock also highlighted the importance of international cooperation, stating,
"We must now use all possibilities provided by maritime law to stop such vessels."
Germany's stance reflects growing concern among European nations regarding security in the Baltic region, where Russian naval activity threatens both economic and military interests. The Baltic Sea has become a focal point of geopolitical tension since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The collaboration between Baltic states and Finland, alongside the push for tougher sanctions, demonstrates the EU's determination to counter Russia's aggressive policies, which risk destabilizing the region. These steps form part of a broader EU strategy to enhance security and protect critical infrastructure from external threats.
