Investigating Endocannabinoid Activity in Long-Distance Runners
Scientists from Germany explored how endocannabinoids are produced in the bodies of runners during prolonged endurance exercise, particularly throughout a marathon. Their findings revealed that levels of anandamide—a key endocannabinoid—increase starting at the 14-kilometer mark and remain elevated for up to 45 minutes after crossing the finish line. This discovery sheds light on the biochemical foundations behind the well-known 'runner’s high.'
Study Design and Key Findings
The research, published in BMC Medicine, was led by psychiatrist Michael Siebers from the University of Duisburg-Essen. The initial phase involved 19 experienced marathon runners completing a race around Lake Baldeney. For comparison, the same participants later covered the identical distance on foot at a walking pace. Blood samples and emotional self-assessments were collected regularly throughout both trials.
The study also identified another endocannabinoid, 2-AG, which became more active near the race’s end and during recovery periods. Extending the research, ultramarathon runners covering distances between 100 and 230 kilometers were examined as well. A significant conclusion was that exercise intensity plays a more crucial role in stimulating endocannabinoid production than the duration of the activity. Notably, excessively long runs did not result in proportional increases in endocannabinoid levels, likely due to accumulated fatigue.
These insights emphasize the importance of understanding the biochemical responses of athletes’ bodies during intense physical activity. Such knowledge could enhance training regimens and provide a deeper grasp of how exercise influences runners’ psychological well-being. Furthermore, unraveling the workings of the endocannabinoid system may pave the way for new approaches to support athletes during preparation and recovery phases.
