Nintendo Ends Console Deliveries Across Europe
Starting in early 2027, Nintendo will stop shipping its Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED models to Europe, a decision revealed on July 7, 2023. The move stems from updated European Union rules mandating that electronic devices allow users to replace batteries on their own. Production of these consoles will continue throughout 2026, and they will remain on store shelves until the end of that year.
From 2027 onward, Nintendo will no longer supply these models to retail outlets or sell them through the official Nintendo Store in regions served by Nintendo of Europe. This affects markets where the company operates, including European countries, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, and South Africa.
New Models and Compliance Efforts
Nintendo plans to launch updated consoles with user-replaceable batteries, starting with the Switch 2, set for release in fall 2026. This new model will feature a 5172 mAh battery—roughly 1% less capacity than the current 5220 mAh version. However, the device will be about 10 grams heavier, and each Joy-Con 2 controller adds roughly 2 grams, bringing the total weight to around 548 grams.
In summer 2026, the company will begin selling Joy-Con controllers with swappable batteries. By winter, updated Joy-Con 2, Switch 2 Pro Controller, and Nintendo 64 and GameCube controllers for the Switch 2 will hit the market. Concurrently, Nintendo will phase out the Switch Pro Controller, Sega Mega Drive and SNES controllers for Switch, and the Pokémon Go Plus+ device.
Through these changes, Nintendo is aligning with new EU legislation, gradually replacing its products with models featuring replaceable batteries, enabling users to swap out power sources themselves.
This decision by Nintendo reflects a broader industry trend where more manufacturers are prioritizing environmental sustainability and product longevity.
Adapting to EU requirements could enhance consumer experience and cut down on electronic waste. Introducing battery-replaceable models may also boost the company’s reputation among eco-conscious buyers.
