Norway Selects South Korea's Chunmoo in $2 Billion Long-Range Missile Deal

Норвегія уклала угоду із Південною Кореєю на постачання систем балістичних ракет вартістю 2 мільярди доларів.

Norway's Major Missile System Acquisition

Norway's parliament has approved a $2 billion (19.5 billion kroner) plan to acquire long-range missile systems, significantly boosting its defensive posture in the Arctic. The Norwegian Ministry of Defence intends to purchase 16 launchers under this program. The South Korean Chunmoo system from Hanwha Aerospace is now the favored contender, having outmatched the American Lockheed Martin HIMARS systems in the tender process. This major investment reflects Norway's commitment to modernizing its military capabilities in a strategically vital region.

Key Advantages of the Chunmoo System

The Chunmoo system is capable of striking targets up to 500 km away, a critical range in modern warfare. The decisive factors in its selection include:

  • A maximum strike range of 500 kilometers
  • The shortest delivery timeline among competitors
  • Plans for missile production on European soil

Furthermore, Hanwha Aerospace has established a joint venture with the Polish firm WB Electronics, highlighting the international dimension of this defense agreement.

This is a weapon that can hit targets deep in enemy territory, which is decisive in modern warfare.

Peter Frolich, Ministry of Defence Representative

The missile deal signals a strategic shift in Norway's defense policy, aimed at strengthening its military presence in the increasingly important Arctic region. As a NATO member, Norway seeks to enhance its military capabilities in response to growing activity and potential threats from other nations operating in the area.
