Norway's Support for Ukraine
The Norwegian government has allocated 1.2 billion kroner (approximately €111.5 million) to develop and procure maritime surface drones for Ukraine. These funds come from the Nansen Program, which has been a key vehicle for supporting Ukraine amid ongoing challenges. The drones will be sourced from both Norwegian and Ukrainian industries.
Norway and the United Kingdom jointly lead a maritime coalition group that assists Ukraine in its naval operations. A significant milestone was reached in September 2023, when Ukraine's maritime corridor in the Black Sea became operational. Since then, over 200 million tons of cargo have passed through this route, more than half of which consists of grain.
“The export of grain and other goods via the Black Sea is vital for Ukraine's economy and global food security,” stated the Norwegian government.
Norway aims to deliver its 200th drone to Ukraine by the end of 2026. These unmanned vessels will come in various configurations, capable of carrying sensors, weapons, or aerial drones. This initiative is part of a broader effort, as the Norwegian parliament (Storting) has extended the Nansen Program into 2026 with a budget of 70 billion kroner. Norwegian Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik emphasized that 'cooperation with Ukraine provides invaluable experience for Norwegian specialists and will enhance the navy's ability to integrate unmanned vessels in line with the new long-term plan.'
