Ukraine's Cyberpolice Warns of New BankID Phishing Scam Targeting Accounts

Кіберполіція України повідомляє про новий випадок шахрайства з BankID, що ставить під загрозу безпеку банківських рахунків громадян.

Ukraine's Cyberpolice Issues Urgent Alert

Ukraine's Cyberpolice has issued a warning concerning a new phishing scheme. In this scam, fraudsters are using counterfeit websites bearing the logo of the National Bank's BankID system, while posing as international funds offering payments. The criminals' ultimate goal is to gain full access to victims' bank accounts. This alert comes as cybercriminals increasingly exploit digital verification systems trusted by the public.

Scammers are distributing messages through social media and messaging apps. These messages contain lures such as 'Receive payments from an international fund right now!' along with links to phishing sites. These fake websites are designed to visually mimic official banking platforms, making them difficult to distinguish from the real ones. When a victim clicks the link, they are redirected to a page that impersonates a bank's login portal.

On this fraudulent page, users are prompted to enter their login credentials, password, card number, CVV code, and PIN. Once the scammers obtain this sensitive data, they link the victim's online banking to their own devices and proceed to drain the funds. The Cyberpolice also noted a rise in fraudsters exploiting users' desire to obtain a 'blue verification checkmark' on Instagram to hijack accounts.

Safety Advice for the Public

Experts stress that no legitimate organization will ever ask users for their online banking login and password. Any request for a PIN or CVV code is a clear sign of fraud. Citizens are advised to follow several simple rules:

  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links;
  • Verify any information regarding payments exclusively on the official websites of the relevant organizations.

This situation underscores the critical need for vigilance in the online space, especially as fraudulent schemes become more sophisticated and exploit public trust. The Cyberpolice urges everyone to remain cautious and not fall for tempting offers. Public education on cybersecurity remains a key factor in combating these types of crimes.
