Ukrainians planning to travel to EU countries must be prepared for the introduction of new conditions for short-term stays. The visa-free regime remains, but over the next two years, they will encounter digital border control. The changes mean a more automated process, but they will require proper preparation.
Changes in the Visa-Free Regime
Ukrainians with biometric passports can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. It is important to note that the passport must be valid for at least three months after the date of return. The biggest change will be that traditional stamps in passports will be replaced with digital data.
The introduction of the new EES system will significantly change border crossing, replacing traditional stamps with digital data on entry and exit.
Launch of the Entry/Exit System
On October 12, 2025, the system will start that will replace stamps in passports with digital data. This process will last for six months, and by April 2026, the system will be fully in place. In addition, Ukrainians will have to obtain the electronic ETIAS permit for travel.
