Hungarian Prime Minister’s Visit to Brussels

Hungary’s newly elected Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, is traveling to Brussels for talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The primary goal of the trip is to unlock EU funds, which would prevent the loss of approximately €10 billion before an August deadline. These negotiations became possible after the 'Tisza' party won a supermajority in the April 12 elections.

Magyar plans to visit Brussels on Wednesday. He stated:

“On Wednesday, I am flying to Brussels for informal talks with the European Commission president about unblocking EU funds. We have no time to waste.”
Hungary currently risks losing roughly €10 billion from post-pandemic recovery funds, as about €18 billion remain frozen due to concerns over rule of law and corruption.

A delegation from the 'Tisza' party already met with European Commission representatives in Brussels on Saturday. Additionally, talks were held in Budapest on April 18-19 with von der Leyen’s chief of staff, Björn Seibert. Magyar also seeks access to:

  • additional EU defense funding,
  • the lifting of daily fines imposed over migration disputes,
  • support for future sanctions against Russia.

EU officials hope that Hungary can maintain a consistent stance on Ukraine and abandon its resistance to Kyiv’s European integration. At the same time, for the talks to succeed, Budapest must show progress on rule-of-law issues. Magyar emphasized:

“I can say that it is extremely important to bring this money home, and as quickly as possible.”

According to the European Commission, this necessary work will continue as both sides seek ways to reach consensus and unlock the funds that remain held up due to political disagreements.

Economic Impact of the Visit

Magyar’s trip to Brussels marks a crucial step for Hungary in terms of the country’s financial stability. Unlocking EU funds could significantly boost Hungary’s post-pandemic economic recovery, as these resources are used to support various sectors. Key factors for successful negotiations remain the rule-of-law issues, which are a central focus for the European Commission, as well as Hungary’s position on supporting Ukraine on the international stage.

While Magyar focuses on securing vital EU funds, his administration is also under pressure to implement necessary reforms and address ongoing concerns regarding rule of law. This visit comes at a crucial time, as Hungary seeks to strengthen its position within the EU.
