Ukraine and Russia Conduct Prisoner Exchange

A prisoner exchange between Ukraine and the Russian Federation took place on April 11, 2026, resulting in the return of 182 Ukrainians. Among those freed were 175 service members and 7 civilians. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope for further exchanges, stating:

“We hope to continue the exchanges in the very near future. At least from our side, we are doing all the work for this.”

Of the 175 released service members, 28 were officers who had been held captive since 2022. The majority had defended Ukraine on the most intense sectors of the front line, representing various units including:

  • The National Guard
  • The State Border Guard Service
  • The Armed Forces
  • Territorial Defense forces
  • Air assault, motorized infantry, and mechanized units

The oldest released service member is 63 years old, while the youngest is 21.

This exchange also secured the return of 12 prisoners of war from the 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine 'Azov', including 11 servicemen from the 'Azov' Brigade and one from the 'Kara-Dag' Brigade. The Coordination Headquarters confirmed that 12 other Ukrainians, whose fates were previously unknown, were also identified as being in captivity. Such swaps are a rare point of diplomatic contact in the ongoing conflict.

President Zelenskyy emphasized the significance of these returns, noting:

“The return of every one of our people matters.”
He also highlighted the efforts of the Coordination Headquarters team and other services working to bring Ukrainians home: “To our entire team of the Coordination Headquarters and the intelligence services, the Security Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, of course, the army, and most of all – to every Ukrainian unit on the front line that secures the replenishment of the exchange fund for Ukraine. Your courage, warriors, is the guarantee that we can return people.”

Ukraine's Ongoing Efforts to Recover Prisoners

This exchange marks a significant step in the process of repatriating Ukrainians unlawfully detained by the aggressor and demonstrates Ukraine's continued commitment to resolving the issue of prisoners of war. These efforts underscore the critical humanitarian dimensions of the conflict and highlight the need for sustained international support on human rights issues. Further exchanges remain vital for the families awaiting their loved ones and for sustaining the morale of Ukrainian forces defending the nation.

In a similar vein, a recent exchange before Easter saw the return of 40 troops from the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, highlighting ongoing efforts to reunite service members with their families. These exchanges, though infrequent, serve as crucial moments in the broader context of the conflict. For more details on this significant event, see the full report on the Easter prisoner exchange.
