Prisoner Exchange at a Standstill
The exchange of prisoners of war between Ukraine and Russia has been suspended. The last major swaps took place in the autumn of 2025. On January 29, 2026, Ukraine recovered the bodies of 1000 of its fallen defenders, marking a significant step in the ongoing repatriation process for the deceased. These exchanges are a critical humanitarian issue in the ongoing war, often serving as a barometer for diplomatic relations.
According to information from Ukrainian sources, the process of returning Ukrainian defenders from Russian captivity has been halted on Moscow's initiative. It is known that in October 2025, 185 Ukrainian military personnel were freed from Russian captivity. However, despite ongoing efforts, the Kremlin continues to hold more than a thousand Ukrainians whose exchange was agreed upon as far back as late 2025.
Repatriation Efforts Continue
On January 29, 2026, as part of the continuing repatriation process, the bodies of 1000 Ukrainian defenders were transferred to Ukraine. It was reported that the remains of Russian military personnel were also handed over to their side. The situation regarding prisoners is linked to discussions on a 20-point plan taking place in Abu Dhabi, where an open trilateral discussion on a vision for ending the war was held.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the situation, stating, 'The Russians have stopped the process. They are not very interested in exchanging people because they do not feel it gives them anything. They think it gives something to us. But I think they also need to think about their own people, their own military.'
Thus, the prisoner exchange remains a complex and sensitive issue requiring further resolution. The suspension of swaps by Moscow threatens both humanitarian concerns and the potential for further diplomatic settlement. The importance of repatriating the fallen Ukrainian soldiers also underscores the need to find pathways to resume dialogue between the sides, even amidst a protracted conflict.
