OSCE to consider Russian strikes on Ukraine
At Ukraine's request, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) will examine Russian strikes and the Russian Federation's disregard for peace efforts. This issue became central at the Ukraine-NATO Council meeting that took place on January 12, 2022. During the discussion, emphasis was placed on the massive strikes targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
It is worth noting that Russia deployed the intermediate-range ballistic missile 'Oreshnik', further highlighting the threatening situation. Andriy Sybiha, Ukraine's representative, emphasized that
"there have been and will be no pauses in pressure on Russia".
He also urged all participating states of the OSCE to recognize the threat and scale of the challenge posed by Russia's actions.
Next Steps
The next important step in this process will be the inaugural meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council, which will take place on January 15, 2026. This meeting is expected to allow participating countries to discuss the situation in Ukraine and take necessary measures to counter aggression.
This situation underscores the importance of international reaction to Russia's aggression, as strikes on civilian infrastructure cause significant harm not only to Ukraine but also jeopardize peace in the region. Discussions in the OSCE may become an important step towards consolidating international support for Ukraine and exerting pressure on Russia, which, in turn, could influence the further development of the conflict. An important goal is:
- condemnation of aggression;
- development of effective mechanisms to ensure peace in the region.
