Ukrainians' Expectations of Victory: Why Willingness to Compromise is Growing

In Ukrainian society, expectations regarding the end of the war are shifting toward compromise options, as the majority do not believe in the possibility of a complete defeat of Russia in the near future. The head of the sociological group 'Rating', Oleksiy Antypovych, notes that about 10% of Ukrainians support the option of 'fighting until reaching the borders of 1991'. This indicates a change in attitudes within society, where more and more people lean towards the idea of compromise to end hostilities.

In 2022, around 15% of Ukrainians were inclined to fight until the tridents were above the Kremlin, but the situation has changed. In 2023, expectations for reaching the borders of 1991 have dominated, becoming more acceptable for a significant part of society. Oleksiy Antypovych emphasizes that

“the desired scenario has not disappeared”
and adds that
“combat actions can be halted, but the war with Russia cannot end as long as Russia exists”
.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also believes that Russia and Ukraine should make compromises, reflecting the international opinion on the need to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Thus, the readiness of Ukrainians for compromise may indicate a desire for stability and peace, despite the difficult situation in the country.

Changes in the Socio-Psychological Climate

The increasing willingness of Ukrainians to compromise may indicate a change in the socio-psychological climate in the context of the prolonged war. Reflecting the realities faced by society, these sentiments may stem from war fatigue and a desire to normalize life. This may also serve as a signal to international partners about the need to intensify efforts in negotiations to find an acceptable solution for both parties involved in the conflict.
