Strike on Odesa Brings Tragedy
The city of Odesa has declared a day of mourning after a Russian military attack in the early hours of April 6 resulted in three fatalities and left 15 people wounded. By 9:00 AM, it was confirmed that 13 of the injured had been hospitalized. This latest assault is part of a pattern of attacks on Ukrainian port cities since the full-scale invasion began.
The attack caused significant damage across the city. In the Prymorskyi district:
- A residential high-rise building was damaged;
- Seven private houses were hit.
In the Kyivskyi district, the strike affected:
- One multi-story building;
- Five private houses;
- A private preschool facility;
- A store;
- 27 automobiles.
Authorities have launched an investigation into potential war crimes in connection with the incident.
The Odesa City Council stated: 'A day of mourning has been declared in Odesa today in connection with the tragedy caused by the enemy attack on the night of April 6, which led to loss of life.'
In a show of respect, the national flag of Ukraine and the flag of Odesa, both adorned with black ribbons, have been lowered to half-mast on buildings of local government, state enterprises, institutions, and organizations. Furthermore, all city enterprises and organizations, regardless of ownership, have been advised to limit the use of music and refrain from holding entertainment events.
Local officials are taking steps to honor the memory of the deceased and to address the aftermath of the attack.
This tragedy underscores the severe and ongoing impact of the war on Ukrainian civilians. The declaration of a day of mourning serves to support the families of the victims and to remind the international community of the human cost of the conflict. The investigation into possible war crimes is a critical step toward achieving accountability and justice for those affected.
The recent events in Odesa highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the city amid the conflict. This follows another tragic incident earlier this month, where a day of mourning was declared due to a drone strike that caused significant casualties and damage. Such repeated assaults underscore the pressing need for international attention and support for the affected communities.
