Odesa Declares Day of Mourning

According to Главком: The city of Odesa has declared April 1, 2026, a day of mourning following a deadly Russian attack on March 28. The Odesa City Council officially confirmed that the strike killed three people: a 34-year-old man, a 35-year-old woman, and a man who later succumbed to severe injuries. The council stated:

“April 1, 2026, has been declared a day of mourning in Odesa in connection with the tragedy resulting from the enemy attack on March 28, which led to loss of life.”

Aftermath of the Attack

The assault occurred on the night of March 28, when Russian forces launched 273 strike drones against Ukraine, including Shahed, Gerbera, and Itlamas models. While Ukrainian air defense forces managed to intercept most of the drones, the city still suffered devastating consequences. In the Primorsky district, a direct hit on the roof of a maternity hospital caused partial destruction of the structure between the fourth and fifth floors of an adjacent apartment building. The blast wave also shattered windows in residential buildings across the district, and fires broke out in homes in the private sector. This attack is part of a wider pattern of Russian strikes targeting Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, which has escalated in recent years.

This incident followed another massive drone attack by the Russian Federation on the Odesa region on the night of March 26. That earlier strike injured one person and damaged port, energy, and industrial infrastructure, sparking fires at the impact sites.

In observance of the day of mourning, the State Flag of Ukraine and the city flag, adorned with black ribbons, will be flown at half-mast on buildings of local government bodies, enterprises, and institutions. The use of music and the holding of entertainment events are also recommended to be restricted.

This tragedy underscores the persistent threat faced by the Ukrainian population amid the ongoing war. Attacks on civilian infrastructure highlight the severity of the situation and the need for enhanced security measures. The declaration of a day of mourning serves as a crucial step to honor the memory of the victims and support their grieving families.

In light of the recent tragic events in Odesa, it is important to consider the broader context of escalating attacks on civilian infrastructure. Just days before this drone strike, another assault resulted in injuries and significant damage to a maternity hospital.
