Climate Change and Extreme Downpours in Odessa

Climate change is already affecting weather conditions in Ukrainian cities, particularly in Odessa. Extreme downpours are becoming more common, causing floods, street inundations, and transportation issues. This was reported by the publication 'Glavcom' citing meteorologists from Telegraf.

Since 2015, Odessa has experienced 14 heavy rains, during which 50 to 100 mm of precipitation fell over a few hours. Compared to previous years, such events occurred only 2-3 times. According to meteorologists, these extreme occurrences are now becoming more frequent, especially over the sea. The last heavy rain in Odessa was caused by a cyclone that got stuck over the city due to a northern blockage. These events, once typical for the tropics, can now occur in other latitudes.

According to candidate of geographical sciences Vira Balabukh: 'The warmer the air, the more moisture it can hold. This is physics: warmer air - more moisture - stronger rains.'

Similar occurrences are already being observed in other regions of Ukraine. For example, in Lviv and Brody, over 100 mm of precipitation fell in a short time, which could pose a serious threat to the cities. Heavy rains in metropolitan areas can cause flooding, complicate transportation, and create other problems for local residents.

Experts recommend taking preventive measures and implementing 'green' infrastructure to reduce the risks from such extreme precipitation, which are becoming increasingly common due to climate change.

The deterioration of climatic conditions is leading to an increase in extreme downpours in various cities of Ukraine, which requires appropriate measures to combat the consequences and minimize risks.
