Charges Filed Against Viktor Medvedchuk
Ukraine's Office of the Prosecutor General has formally submitted an indictment against former Member of Parliament Viktor Medvedchuk. He is accused of masterminding a scheme to seize state-owned property. The case is being tried in absentia, as the accused is currently residing within the Russian Federation, according to Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko.
Investigators established that the alleged criminal activity took place between 2015 and 2018. The former parliamentarian is charged with forming and leading an organized criminal group that illegally took control of a section of a major oil product pipeline. The asset was valued at 1.4 billion hryvnias at the time. To execute the scheme, the group enlisted experts to provide deliberately false conclusions in court proceedings and engaged in abuses of authority at various levels.
Organized Group's Actions and Consequences
According to the investigation, members of the organized group laundered more than 29.9 million euros in revenue generated from operating the pipeline. Viktor Medvedchuk faces charges for:
- organizing the misappropriation of property on an especially large scale,
- money laundering,
- abuse of authority,
- and the falsification of expert conclusions.
The investigation was conducted in absentia. Materials concerning other participants have been separated into distinct proceedings, and those individuals are currently wanted by authorities.
"After gaining control of the asset, the group members used it for personal enrichment, laundering over 29.9 million euros in revenue obtained through the criminal exploitation of the pipeline," stated Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko.
In a related action, the state has also reclaimed ownership of 24 hectares of forest in the Obukhiv district of the Kyiv region. This land had been under the illegal control of Viktor Medvedchuk's family. Ruslan Kravchenko emphasized that "the state's position remains unchanged: every exposed instance of abuse involving Ukraine's strategic assets must receive a proper legal assessment." He underscored the active measures being taken by law enforcement to locate, arrest, and confiscate the assets of individuals suspected of crimes against the state and corruption.
This case is part of a broader campaign by Ukrainian law enforcement aimed at restoring justice and combating corruption. The recovery of state ownership over strategic assets like oil pipelines and forest land demonstrates the government's commitment to protecting national interests. The charges against Medvedchuk, a prominent pro-Russian figure before the full-scale invasion, highlight the seriousness of the alleged abuses and the critical importance of maintaining legal control over state resources in Ukraine.
