Opioids Show Limited Effectiveness in Treating Acute Pain

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Sydney has revealed that opioids offer only marginal benefits for acute pain relief. The findings were published on June 9, 2026. The analysis reviewed 59 systematic reviews covering over 50 acute pain conditions in both adults and children. Substances evaluated included codeine, morphine, oxycodone, and tramadol.

Results indicated that oral opioids were only slightly more effective than a placebo for acute musculoskeletal pain. Any relief they provided lasted just a few hours within the first day or two. At the same time, opioid use increased the risk of side effects such as nausea and vomiting.

Opioid Efficacy and Associated Risks

The study also found that opioids showed moderate effectiveness for certain types of pain, including:

  • stomach pain,
  • post-dental surgery pain,
  • limb injuries,
  • pain during childbirth.

However, for procedures like limb surgeries, tonsillectomies, and kidney stone pain, opioids demonstrated no advantage over a placebo. It is important to note that dependence and tolerance to opioids can develop within just a few days of regular use.

These results underscore the need to reconsider how acute pain is managed with opioids, given their limited effectiveness and potential risks.

The findings could significantly impact clinical practice, as doctors may need to explore alternative treatments for patients suffering from acute pain. With growing concerns over opioid abuse and side effects, developing new pain management strategies that minimize addiction risk while providing effective symptom relief is crucial.

As the medical community reassesses pain management approaches, it is essential to consider alternatives that may offer more substantial benefits. For instance, a recent study has shown that bariatric surgery can significantly outperform conventional medications for weight loss, providing a promising option for patients struggling with obesity-related pain. This highlights the ongoing need for innovative solutions in both pain and weight management.
