Missing Oscar Statuette

An Academy Award statuette won by the film 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin' has disappeared at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. The incident occurred during a Lufthansa flight taken by Pavel Talankin, a Russian co-creator of the documentary, traveling from JFK to Frankfurt. Talankin was required to check the trophy as baggage after U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents claimed it exceeded weight limits and posed a potential security risk.

Film director David Borenstein shared details on Instagram, explaining that a TSA agent stopped Talankin and argued that the Oscar could be used as a weapon. Since Talankin had no bag for the statuette, it was placed in a box and stored in the aircraft's cargo hold. It never arrived in Frankfurt. German airline Lufthansa is currently searching for the missing award.

Reaction to the Incident

It is also worth noting that the Danish-Czech documentary 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin' was named Best Documentary Feature at the 2026 Academy Awards. After receiving the statuette, Talankin had it blessed at a Paris church by Archpriest Alexei Uminsky. The incident has sparked outrage among the film's supporters and drawn attention to airport security procedures.

The disappearance of the Oscar highlights the complexities of airport security, particularly when handling valuable and symbolic items. Public and media reactions to this situation could prompt a review of existing rules for transporting awards and valuables. Lufthansa's search for the statuette may also influence future security and passenger service protocols, especially for travelers carrying trophies and rare possessions.
