Features of Cough Treatment: Which Remedies to Choose

Ефективні способи лікування кашлю: які засоби обрати для полегшення симптомів

Coughing is the most common symptom among adults and children during the cold and flu season. It can occur as a result of external irritants affecting the respiratory organs. It is important to accurately determine the origin and nature of the cough in order to start its treatment. Although there are numerous over-the-counter medications available at pharmacies, it is advisable to consult a specialist who can properly select the composition and dosage of the medication, based on the patient's condition.

Types of Cough and Their Treatment Approach

There are two main types of cough:

  1. dry - occurs during inflammation of the back wall of the larynx, unpleasant irritating sensations in the throat cause a cough reflex;
  2. productive - develops when there is mucus accumulation in the bronchi, aimed at expelling phlegm and clearing the airways.

Different medications are designated for each type. The therapy for a dry cough involves reducing laryngeal inflammation, which is the primary cause of irritation. This involves using lozenges, throat gargles, and solutions. However, if bronchial secretions do not occur, yet accumulate in the airways, expectorants are prescribed to help convert a dry cough into a productive one. In the case of a wet cough, phlegm usually passes on its own, although often too slowly. For its treatment, mucolytic agents are used that thin the mucus and stimulate the production of pulmonary surfactant. This way, the respiratory organs clear and recover faster, thus alleviating the cough.

How to Choose Effective Cough Medications

When selecting cough medications, specialists focus on:

  1. the patient's age and individual characteristics;
  2. the cause of the disease;
  3. the concentration of the active ingredient and the dosage of the medication;
  4. contraindications to the use of certain medications.

It is extremely important to correctly choose the active substance - as it affects the speed of symptom alleviation and the overall effectiveness of the treatment. The form of the medication release typically depends on the patient's age. Children are more often prescribed syrups and lozenges, while adults receive tablets. However, this also depends on the patient's personal preferences, and if the syrup dosage allows for its use by adults, it can replace regular tablets. It is important to be careful with herbal medicines. They are considered relatively safe, but to avoid unpleasant side effects, the patient must not have allergies to the components. It is important to carefully study the composition of medications, and if a reaction occurs during treatment, discontinue use and consult a specialist for an alternative medication.
