GLP-1 Drugs Like Ozempic Linked to One-Third Lower Breast Cancer Risk

GLP-1 Medications and Breast Cancer Risk

Researchers at Penn Medicine have found that taking GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy is associated with a notable reduction in the likelihood of developing breast cancer. The study focused on women aged 45 to 80 with a body mass index of 25 or higher. Analysis of electronic health records from 111,646 women showed that those using GLP-1 medications had a 35.1% lower probability of developing this type of cancer, compared to a 30.5% risk reduction in a matched group not taking these drugs. The research covers data from January 2022 through June 2025.

Study Details and Future Directions

Out of the total study population, 15,264 women were prescribed GLP-1 medications, while 96,382 patients did not receive them. Dr. Elizabeth McDonald, a professor of radiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and lead author of the study, noted that

“the work does not prove a direct causal link between taking the drugs and reduced disease risk” - Elizabeth McDonald.

She emphasized that the findings “add to a growing body of evidence supporting further investigation of these drugs as a possible cancer prevention tool.”

The research team also stressed that “the primary goal of researchers is to find more effective ways to prevent breast cancer.” GLP-1 drugs, which mimic a natural hormone that helps control appetite and blood sugar levels, include:

  • semaglutide-based medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy
  • tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound)

The researchers are working to launch a multicenter clinical trial to further clarify the role of these drugs in breast cancer prevention.

These findings open new possibilities for the medical community and could serve as a foundation for additional clinical trials evaluating the potential of GLP-1 drugs in combating breast cancer. Given the rising popularity of these medications for treating diabetes and managing weight, their use in a preventive capacity may represent an important step in lowering the risk of this serious disease among women. Future studies will help clarify the mechanisms behind these drugs and their role in cancer prevention.

In light of these promising findings regarding GLP-1 medications and breast cancer risk, it's also worth exploring how these drugs may impact overall health. A recent study has examined whether the Galaxy Watch 8 can assist GLP-1 patients in maintaining muscle mass. Understanding the broader implications of GLP-1 treatments could enhance patient care and optimize health outcomes.
