Peace Talks on Ending the Ukraine War

While negotiations to end the war in Ukraine are ongoing, European officials estimate the conflict could persist for another one to three years. The United States is mediating talks between Ukraine and Russia, but no tangible progress has been made so far. Both sides are reportedly attempting to avoid provoking the anger of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Three rounds of trilateral talks have recently been held, two in Abu Dhabi and one in Geneva. The Ukrainian delegation is led by Rustem Umerov, while the Russian side is represented by Vladimir Medinsky. U.S. Special Representative Steve Witkopf is also participating. Former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Ivo Daalder has suggested these meetings are not bringing an end to the war any closer, but are merely a political exercise aimed at avoiding blame for the failure of the American president's initiatives.

The Military Situation

The Trump administration has currently halted the majority of direct military aid to Ukraine, though Ukrainian forces continue to receive intelligence support from the U.S. European nations are still supplying Ukraine with American-made weaponry. The Russian side is demanding:

  • The complete surrender of Ukraine's Donbas region;
  • A comprehensive restructuring of the Ukrainian government, military, and media.

In response, Ukraine proposes a mutual withdrawal of troops and demands security guarantees from the U.S. and Europe. Russia has rejected these initiatives, as well as plans to deploy European peacekeeping contingents. The war in Ukraine has become a protracted conflict with significant global implications.

Amid these negotiations, President Trump has stated that a deal is quite close, though he noted some proposals appear foolish. Consequently, despite active diplomatic efforts, the prospect of ending the war remains highly uncertain. The fundamental disagreements over territory and sovereignty continue to block a viable path to peace.

The U.S.-mediated talks between Ukraine and Russia are critically important for the future of the region and international security. Although the parties are attempting to find a compromise, deep divisions on key issues—such as the status of Donbas and political reforms in Ukraine—remain substantial. Further developments on the international stage, as well as domestic political decisions within Ukraine and Russia, will likely influence the dynamics of these negotiations.
