Abu Dhabi Hosts Diplomatic Talks
The first three-way diplomatic meetings between delegations from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States concluded in Abu Dhabi on January 24 after two days of discussions. These talks represent a significant diplomatic engagement, occurring amidst a prolonged period of heightened regional tensions. Participants addressed several critical issues, including Russia's territorial claims in the Donbas region, the security situation surrounding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, and potential steps for de-escalating the conflict. A subsequent round of talks has been scheduled for February 1.
The meetings, held in the United Arab Emirates, involved not only diplomats but also senior military officials from all three nations. The delegations included figures such as Jared Kushner, son-in-law of the U.S. President, and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff. At the close of the second day, all participants gathered for a joint lunch.
Key Issues on the Agenda
The parties discussed Russia's territorial claims in Donbas and the ongoing dispute over the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, a major concern for regional safety. Conversations also focused on specific de-escalation measures from both sides. Following the meetings, military representatives identified a list of technical matters to be addressed in the next round.
It is understood that all topics were on the table, with no issue left unaddressed, and the parties treated each other with mutual respect. One American official noted:
“At one point, it almost looked like the negotiators were becoming friends,” a source said.
Another U.S. representative emphasized that the talks went as well as could have been expected and expressed satisfaction with the progress made.
Consequently, these initial three-way talks mark an important step in seeking pathways to resolve the ongoing conflict and underscore the willingness of all sides to engage in dialogue. They may lay the groundwork for future diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving regional stability. Given the enduring strain between Ukraine and Russia, U.S. involvement in such discussions highlights the critical role of international support in conflict resolution. The next round, planned for February 1, will provide an opportunity for the parties to continue working on unresolved key issues.
