Poland is ending temporary protection for Ukrainians in 2026: what will change

Ситуація з українцями в Польщі: які нові умови чекають на них до 2026 року.

Changes in Polish legislation regarding Ukrainians

The Polish government has announced the termination of temporary protection for Ukrainians after March 4, 2026. It is noted that after this date, Ukrainians will be transferred to general legalization rules, granting them the same rights as other foreigners in Poland. The President of Poland emphasized that Ukrainians should have equal opportunities with other citizens.

New legalization system

Holders of PESEL UKR who intend to stay in Poland will be able to apply for a temporary residence card (Karta czasowego pobytu) for a period of three years. It is important to note that the application for PESEL UKR must be submitted within 14 days of entering Poland. This will allow Ukrainians to legalize their stay in the country under new conditions.

  • Social benefits, including the '800 Plus' program, will be received only by parents who are officially employed in Poland.
  • Free access to doctors will be available only to insured individuals.
  • Free housing for able-bodied Ukrainians is provided only in emergency situations.

These changes may significantly impact Ukrainians remaining in Poland, as they will need to adapt to new living and legalization conditions.

These decisions by the Polish government indicate a gradual return to general rules for foreigners, which may significantly change the socio-economic situation for Ukrainians who remain in Poland. In the context of the war in Ukraine and the large number of displaced persons, it is important how these new rules will affect their integration and opportunities in the country. Adapting to new conditions will require from Ukrainians not only legal knowledge but also the readiness to find jobs and obtain medical insurance, which may pose a challenge for many of them.
