Poland Stops Recognizing Russian Passports Without Chip: From What Date and Why

Польща більше не визнає російських паспортів без чіпа: які наслідки це матиме?

Changes in Recognition of Russian Passports in Poland

Poland will stop recognizing five-year foreign passports of Russian citizens without an electronic biometric chip from April 1, 2026. This decision is part of a broader European trend towards strengthening security measures. According to new rules, starting January 1, 2026, a similar ban will also apply to old-style diplomatic and service passports.

This decision by Poland reflects changes occurring in other Schengen Zone countries. In 2025, a number of countries, including the Baltic States, the Czech Republic, Denmark, and France, have already refused to recognize non-biometric Russian passports. Romania and Germany are expected to join this initiative at the beginning of 2026.

Security Situation in Europe

Additionally, in November 2022, the European Union banned the issuance of multiple-entry visas to Russian citizens. These measures indicate a worsening security situation in Europe and are aimed at increasing control over entry for Russian citizens.

The situation regarding the recognition of Russian passports in Europe reflects general security trends arising in response to political and social challenges.

These decisions may affect the mobility of Russian citizens and their ability to travel to EU countries, which, in turn, could change the nature of relations between Russia and European countries. The further development of events in this area will depend on the political situation and the reactions of other countries to the measures taken.
