Poland Extends Its National Terror Alert
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has extended the country's heightened terrorist threat level until May 31, 2026, effective from March 1, 2024. This decision activates two specific security regimes: the BRAVO regime for general security and the CHARLIE-CRP regime focused on cybersecurity. Special attention will be paid to protecting energy infrastructure, including assets located outside of Poland's borders. This prolonged alert reflects ongoing regional security concerns stemming from the war in neighboring Ukraine.
Stricter Rules for the Polish Card
In a separate move, Poland has amended the rules for obtaining the "Polish Card" (Karta Polaka), making the process more stringent. Key changes include the elimination of two pathways to eligibility. It will no longer be possible to qualify based solely on a certificate from a Polish organization confirming three years of activity promoting Polish culture or national minorities. Furthermore, the option to receive the card for "special merits" to Poland has been rescinded for individuals who cannot provide documented proof of Polish ancestry. Notably, individuals who have previously renounced Polish citizenship will also be ineligible for the card.
The government states these combined measures aim to enhance national security and ensure greater control over the Polish Card application process. As part of the new security protocols, protection levels will be increased at critical sites such as:
- railway hubs
- airports
- government communication systems
- energy infrastructure located outside Poland
These actions form part of a broader strategy to improve security and safeguard Poland's national interests.
The extension of the terror alert and the tightening of Polish Card rules demonstrate the Polish government's serious approach to security and national interests in the face of contemporary challenges.
The heightened protection for strategic sites and the restricted access to the Polish Card are likely to significantly impact immigration policy and social dynamics within Poland. These steps may also aim to better regulate the flow of individuals seeking status in the country, particularly in a global context marked by persistent threats and instability.
