Poland Inks $4.3 Billion Deal to Build Advanced Anti-Drone Defense System

Польща уклала угоду на суму 4,3 мільярда доларів для створення сучасної системи захисту від дронів.

Poland's Major Defense Agreement for Counter-Drone Capabilities

Poland has signed a major defense agreement to develop an integrated counter-drone system valued at $4.3 billion. The total cost of the project is approximately 15 billion Polish zloty, with deployment scheduled to be completed within two years. A portion of the funding will be secured by Poland through the EU's SAFE defense credit program, which allocates around 44 billion euros for the country from a total fund of 150 billion euros. This investment comes as European nations rapidly seek to bolster their air defenses against modern aerial threats.

The Polish Armaments Agency finalized the contract with Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa and Norway's Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. The contract segment with Kongsberg is valued at roughly 16 billion Norwegian kroner, equivalent to about $1.7 billion. As part of the deal, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace plans to expand its manufacturing capabilities within Poland.

System Architecture and Strategic Significance

The new defense system will be built on a multi-layered architecture designed to include:

  • Radar networks,
  • Electronic warfare and jamming systems,
  • Machine gun stations,
  • Compact missiles for drone interception.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that Europe currently lacks a comparable system of this complexity and sophistication for countering unmanned aerial vehicles.

This agreement marks a significant step in strengthening Poland's defense capabilities and enhancing its readiness against contemporary threats posed by unmanned aircraft. The development of such technology is increasingly urgent against the backdrop of rising regional tensions, highlighting the need for advanced, integrated security and defense systems. Furthermore, collaboration with international partners like Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace is expected to not only fortify Poland's defense sector but also stimulate growth in local industry.
